All of us are contributing to food waste. Even if you eat up everything in your plate, you are causing food waste intentionally or unintentionally. This is how it happens.

We buy food from the market and the market is driven by our demand. Banana farmers are throwing away tons of bananas everyday just because we only buy good looking bananas from the supermarket. The link is so clear. Our buying behavior at our local supermarkets is affecting the farmers thousands of miles away. They have to throw away the 100% edible fruits and vegetables because WE think they are not perfectly pretty. What’s the point of shipping them thousands of miles if nobody buys them? So simply damp them in the trash. Yes, we are the ones who create food waste. We are the root cause of the global issue that destroys our planet and brings misery to millions. All because we are picky on the appearance of the food that has nothing to do with its nutrition or taste.
Which pot of yogurt do you choose at the supermarket, the one expiring in four days or the one in two weeks? Most people will choose the later one because it is “fresher”. Have you ever thought about what happens to the other pot? If everybody does just like what you do, the yogurt expiring in four days will be thrown away, although it is perfectly fit for consumption. This is the very reason why supermarkets are throwing away tons of edible food everyday. Stop blaming on the system. Look into the mirror and tell yourself: Yes, I am causing food waste. I am the one to blame on.

  2. Buy only the food you need. Make a shopping list and keep to it strictly.
  3. Measure the food portion when cooking at home. It prevents obesity too.
  4. Choose the ugly-but-delicious fruits and vegetables in the supermarket. (Trust me, as long as they are fresh, the taste can be even better.)
  5. Buy the near-expiring products as long as you can consume them before the expiry date. (They are SAFE to eat.)

Start the change today but do not expect zero food waste tomorrow. Tell your family and friends to do the same. The more people take action, the more powerful we are. Let’s act together to get the right food to the right people, at the right place, right time.
